“Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of every opportunity. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”
Colossians 4:5-6
Lumin’s Faithful Translation
The setting
Paul wrote this from prison to a small church in Colossae, a mixed city where believers worked and traded beside neighbors who did not follow Jesus. “Buying up the opportunity” was marketplace language: don’t waste a rare chance. Salt preserved food and made it worth tasting; speech was meant to be both careful and alive, fitted to the person in front of you.
Reflection
Where is one conversation today asking you to be both truthful and seasoned—clear without being harsh?
A prayer
God, slow my mouth. Give me wisdom for the people already in my path, and let my words be useful and kind, not sharp for their own sake. Help me notice the opening You put in front of me and not walk past it.
Carry it with you
Today, name one conversation you already expect—a coworker, neighbor, or family member—and decide in advance to listen fully before you answer. Offer one concrete help, not a speech: a clear reply, a shared task, or a quiet correction without heat.
