The setting
Paul wrote this letter from prison to his younger coworker Timothy, using the image of a large household filled with both precious and ordinary vessels. In the ancient world, masters selected clean, well-made containers for special service while discarding the rest. The metaphor urged believers to separate from false teaching so they could be ready instruments in God’s ongoing work.
