The setting
In the first-century Greco-Roman world, “walking” was everyday language for a person’s whole pattern of life and choices. Paul wrote to believers in Ephesus, a busy trade city steeped in pagan temples and shifting morals. The phrase about buying up the time pictures a merchant seizing a fleeting market deal before it vanishes.
