The setting
Paul wrote this letter around AD 62 while imprisoned in Rome. Philippi was a Roman colony whose residents prized their Roman citizenship and its privileges. Paul uses this cultural reality to remind the church that their primary identity and loyalty lie elsewhere. Jesus’ resurrection secures our future. These frail bodies and present struggles are not the end of the story. His victory gives us hope, new identity, and strength to live differently today—anchored in eternity rather than temporary circumstances.
