“Jesus, seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing nearby, said to his mother, “Woman, look at your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Look at your mother.” And from that moment the disciple took her into his own home.”
John 19:26-27
Lumin’s Faithful Translation
The setting
Jesus hangs on the cross during his execution outside Jerusalem. Roman soldiers, mocking crowds, and religious leaders surround him. In the midst of this public suffering, he sees his mother Mary and the disciple John standing at the foot of the cross. Even in extreme agony and abandonment, Jesus turns his attention to the needs of his mother. His words establish a new bond of care between Mary and John. This reveals that sacrificial love does not ignore human relationships; it fulfills them. Today it invites us to show faithful care for others even when we face our own pain or loss.
Reflection
Where is God calling you to care for someone else today despite your own struggles? What are you grateful for in how he has cared for you?
A prayer
Lord Jesus, in your suffering you cared for your mother. Give me grace to love and provide for those around me even when life feels heavy. Draw me closer to you on this holy path of sacrifice. Amen.
