“I have been crucified with the Anointed One, and it is no longer I who live; instead, the Anointed One lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by trust in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.”
Galatians 2:20
Lumin’s Faithful Translation
The setting
The apostle Paul wrote his letter to the churches in Galatia around AD 48–55 to counter teachings that required non-Jewish believers to follow Jewish law. Paul, once a fierce opponent of the early Christian movement, experienced a complete turnaround after meeting the risen Jesus. He uses the stark image of crucifixion—a shameful Roman execution—to describe the total end of his former self-centered life. This verse invites us into the heart of Lenten sacrifice: our old patterns and self-reliance must die so Christ can live through us. During this week focused on suffering and sacrifice, it reminds us that following Jesus is not merely about giving things up but about being reshaped by his love. In our own small sufferings and acts of self-denial, we discover his strength and the hope of resurrection life.
Reflection
Where is Christ inviting you to release control today so his life can be seen more clearly in yours? What are you grateful for in this part of your Lenten journey?
A prayer
Jesus, let my old self die today so that your life can take over in me. Give me courage to make the sacrifices this season asks of me. Thank you for loving me enough to give yourself completely.
