“Then he said to them all, “If anyone wants to come after me, they must deny themselves, take up their cross every day, and follow me.”
Luke 9:23
Lumin’s Faithful Translation
The setting
Jesus said this after telling his followers that he would suffer and be rejected. In Roman-occupied Judea, a cross meant public shame and death, not a mild inconvenience. Luke’s “day after day” makes discipleship an ongoing choice, not a single dramatic moment.
Reflection
Where is self-protection quietly steering your choices, and what would it look like to set that aside so you can follow Jesus in a costly, ordinary act of service?
A prayer
Jesus, I want to stay with you when it costs me something. Show me the self I keep defending, and give me courage to put it down so I can love the person in front of me.
Carry it with you
Today, name one comfort you usually protect—time, credit, or ease—and give it away in a concrete act of service. Before you answer a hard request, pause and ask whether following Jesus means saying yes.
