“Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your maidservant and the sojourner may refresh themselves.”

Exodus 23:12

Lumin’s Faithful Translation

The setting

This command sat inside Israel’s covenant law after slavery in Egypt, when rest was a luxury the powerful kept for themselves. God required a shared pause so animals, hired hands, and immigrants were not wrung dry. Ordinary labor was assumed; refusing to let others recover was treated as injustice.

Reflection

Who around you—seen or unseen—needs a chance to “catch their breath,” and what would it cost you to help make that space?

A prayer

God who named both labor and rest, thank you for work that is not a curse. Teach me to treat people who serve as fully human, and to stop before I treat myself as a machine.

Carry it with you

Honor one real task you do today—paid or unpaid—as work God sees, then protect a genuine pause for yourself or someone who rarely gets one (cover a shift, send someone home early, or leave a chore unfinished).
