“Only live worthily of Christ's gospel, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear about you that you stand in one spirit, with one soul striving together for the faith of the gospel.”
Philippians 1:27
Lumin’s Faithful Translation
The setting
Philippi was a Roman military colony whose people prized citizenship and public honor. Paul uses “live as citizens” (politeuesthe) to say their true allegiance is to Christ’s kingdom, not Rome. Unity in the assembly was their public witness in a status-conscious city.
Reflection
Where does “citizenship in Christ’s good news” clash with the status, image, or independence you usually protect—and what would “striving side by side” look like in that exact place today?
A prayer
Jesus, make my ordinary choices match the news I claim. Knit me to others in one spirit so our work together points beyond us.
Carry it with you
Today, before you reply to a tense email or group chat, pause and ask whether your words protect the team’s shared purpose. Choose one concrete act of cooperation—covering a task, giving credit, or refusing gossip—that makes the gospel look credible to someone watching.
