“But shun profane and old wives' fables. Train yourself for godliness. For bodily exercise is profitable only a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of life now and of the life to come.”

1 Timothy 4:7-8

Lumin’s Faithful Translation

The setting

Paul wrote this letter to his younger coworker Timothy, who was leading the church in Ephesus amid competing teachers and cultural pressures. In the Greco-Roman world, athletic training was a familiar ideal of disciplined effort for temporary prizes. Paul redirects that same intentional practice toward lasting spiritual maturity and everyday faithfulness.

Reflection

Where in your routine could intentional “training” in devotion turn an ordinary duty into something that strengthens both your present walk and your hope for what is coming?

A prayer

God, help me treat today’s small choices as real practice in loving You and others. Grow steady devotion in me that lasts.

Carry it with you

Set a 10-minute timer today and read one short Gospel paragraph slowly, asking how it shapes one ordinary task you face. Then do that task with deliberate care as your training ground for godly devotion.
