The setting
In the first-century world of Roman occupation and Jewish expectation, greatness meant power and being waited on by others. Jesus’ disciples had just argued over who would rank highest in his kingdom. He overturned that cultural hierarchy by pointing to his own mission of humble service even to the point of death.
Reflection
Where in your daily routines do you still expect to be served rather than looking for the chance to free someone else from a burden?
A prayer
Jesus, reshape my instincts so I look for ways to lift others instead of waiting to be noticed. Give me courage to serve without applause.

Pick one ordinary chore or errand today that usually falls to someone else—washing the dishes left in the sink or running a quick errand for a coworker—and complete it quietly without mentioning it. Let that single act train your heart toward the kind of service Jesus modeled.
