“Dear friend, you are doing what is faithful whenever you work for the brothers and sisters — even when they are strangers. They have spoken of your love in front of the gathered church. You will do well to send them onward in a way that honors God.”

3 John 5-6

Lumin’s Faithful Translation

The setting

John writes to Gaius, a believer known for opening his home to traveling Christians. In the first century, inns were often unsafe, so hospitality was how the message of Jesus moved from town to town. Welcoming people you did not already know was ordinary, costly kingdom work.

Reflection

Who is a “stranger” in your ordinary circles — someone without a place, a voice, or a next step — and what would it look like to send them onward in a way that honors God?

A prayer

God, loosen my grip on comfort. Show me who needs a welcome from me today, and give me the courage to help in a way that looks like you.

Carry it with you

Look for one person today who is new, overlooked, or between places — a neighbor, coworker, or guest — and offer one concrete help: a meal, a ride, an introduction, or a quiet word of backing. Do it without waiting to be asked or noticed.
