“Learn to do good. Pursue justice. Aid the oppressed. Judge the orphan. Plead the widow's cause.”
Isaiah 1:17
Lumin’s Faithful Translation
The setting
Isaiah spoke these words to people in Judah who kept offering sacrifices while ignoring the poor in their streets. In that culture, widows and orphans had almost no legal standing, so “arguing their case” meant showing up in the city gate and using your voice for someone who could not speak. Worship without that kind of everyday justice was empty.
Reflection
Who around you is “crushed” in a small, everyday way, and what would it look like to make that person glad instead of merely noticing them?
A prayer
God, I don’t want my faith to stay in my head. Show me one person who needs a defender, and give me the courage to show up for them.
Carry it with you
Today, pick one concrete way to stand with someone who has little power—forward a job lead, sit with a neighbor filling out forms, or speak up when a coworker is talked over. Do that one act before the day ends.
