The setting
In first-century Judea under Roman rule, acts like clothing the poor, caring for the ill, and visiting prisoners were uncommon expressions of mercy often ignored by society. Jesus places these deeds at the center of his teaching on the final judgment to show that serving those in need equals serving him.
